EMDR therapy in Missoula.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing is a structured therapy that helps the brain process memories that have stayed stuck, so they lose their charge and stop running the show.

Who it helps

Memories that keep showing up.

People use EMDR for post-traumatic stress, complex trauma, developmental trauma, medical and accident trauma, and the kind of experiences that first responders, nurses, and military members carry. It is also used for anxiety, grief, and memories that keep showing up in relationships.

It has been studied for decades and is recognized by the World Health Organization and the Department of Veterans Affairs as a treatment for PTSD.

It is not a quick fix, and it is not for everyone at every moment. Part of our job is to tell you whether it fits where you are right now.

How it works here

Rarely the first thing we do.

Most people start with skill building and a therapeutic relationship, so there is solid ground to stand on before reprocessing begins. When it is time, sessions follow EMDR’s eight-phase structure.

  1. HistoryWhat happened, what still has a grip, what you want different.
  2. PreparationSkills for staying steady while the work happens.
  3. ReprocessingHolding a memory in mind with eye movements or other bilateral stimulation, until it loses its charge.
  4. Closure and re-evaluationChecking what shifted, and what comes next.

Why Redtail for EMDR

Sam Ore is an EMDRIA-approved EMDR consultant. That means he is certified not just to practice EMDR but to supervise and consult with other therapists who are learning it. He collaborates with the Institute for Creative Mindfulness and New Leaf Counseling Services on EMDR training, and runs weekly consultation groups for EMDR clinicians in Montana. The clinicians on our staff are trained in EMDR and work under that supervision.
